For anyone who has seen the T.V. show Two Broke Girls, you will know it is about two young women (one a former trust fund heiress) who are struggling to get by in NY and dream of starting a cupcake business.
Well, having watched the endless scenes of Max (one of the characters,) baking and selling red velvet and coconut coffee (to name a few) cupcakes, I’ve become a bit obsessed with the need to eat and draw them. Also I found an amazing pink neon fine liner pen in the street and it seems to work well with something as froofy as cupcakes.
So I got involved in the amazing Sketchbook Project, which is based out of the Brooklyn Art Library. They send sketchbooks to the winning organisations (e.g. art schools,) and the participants (students) fill in the sketchbooks with original works. They then send them back to the U.S., where they are sent on an international exhibition!
Sadly I didn’t get to fill up every page, but here are some of the highlights:

Part 3 coming soon. Suggestions for an ending welcome! (This is an old comic I drew years ago, but never found a satisfactory ending. When this is done I’ll start a more recent ongoing serial, I promise.)
So this is my entry for the Yen emerging female artists competition. Sadly it didn’t make the cut, (I think there were some screen colour issues- live and learn) but I think it’s worth sharing. Enjoy!
My Aunt kindly sent me this as she knows I like to use text a lot in my work. Obviously the exhibition date has passed, but it’s a nice chance to show off the work of Angela Cavalieri; we obviously share a love of using words in our art.
Looking at a recent edition of IDN I found the work of Tiffany Bozic very inspiring. Her beautiful works of sea creatures reminded me of a sketch I made some time ago; it was inspired by old-style scientific illustrations of deep-sea life. (See below.)

And this is the Bozic piece that reminded me of my sketch… so detailed and rich!
This is an unnamed comic serial I drew many years ago. I like to think my illustration skills have improved a lot since then- it’s nice to go back and see all the things you could’ve done better.
Anyhow, I thought I’d share it with you, I hope you like it. I’ll be posting bits and pieces over the next few weeks.
So it’s nearly Design Festa time in Tokyo again, as shown by this magnificent poster. If you’re going to be in the Big Sight area I highly recommend going, as I went a few years ago and it was a fantastic experience.
I was hoping to book out a table for volume 34 this year, but just got too busy… If it happens for me next year you will certainly know about it!
Some images from the night I quickly snapped with my phone. I was shortlisted in the typography section of the Create Design Awards. It was an amazing night out at the Forum, with dancing comedians, DJ’s, loads of free hooch, but most importantly, amazing design work by people at the top of their game. Still honoured to have been shortlisted!
